All in one boat (fatalistic angst) -
print article"I look at the streets and it looks like Beirut, but this is here - right in my back yard" (an American citizen on CNN, Sept 12).
It could be that Bush and Blair believe themselves when they say that these were attacks on "the free and democratic world". It could be that the CNN news editors believed they were addressing the real concerns of the average American when they repeatedly reassured the viewers, during the first ten hours of chaos and panic, that "Bush is in a safe place". It could be that the priest who was asked by the CNN interviewer to advise the public how to cope with the fear, was serious when he suggested to "pray for the injured, the missing and especially [!] the president".

But the bottom line, for today's American, is that Beirut is in her back yard. Like millions around the world, she is paying for crimes which are not her own.
We listened to the heads of the American and Israeli war machines when they repeatedly expressed their 'sorrow' for the civilians they have killed. They would explain that regrettably, they had no choice. A local dictator is cynically sacrificing the civilian population, putting children on the line of fire, using their deaths for political gains. Any act of murder is always justified, always necessary, always for a good cause. It is likely that the destroyers of Manhattan applied the same kind of logic to justify their actions to themselves. That's the only kind of logic that is heard in our world.
So now Bush and Blair are trying to unite "the free and democratic" against the third world. They are bluntly asking "whose side are you on?", and sound as if they are forming their coalition for world war III. They probably even believe themselves when they say that the way to protect "the free" (that is, themselves) is to build higher fences, violate more freedoms, further destroy Afghanistan or Iran or Iraq or all of the above. And you hear CNN's professional liberals asking them "to think about the civilians when they retaliate". How familiar and grotesque it is. As if they ever think about civilians - of other countries or their own. As if this message is anything but a green light to go to war. The stupid among them think this war is about Americans who were killed in New York. The vicious know they are calling for a war of hegemony. Both the stupid and the vicious are power drunk and think they won't end up in Beirut.
This is the "freedom and democracy" that Bush and Blair and their like have created: Beirut is in your back yard, you don't understand what this war is about because the media only offers mystic explanations about "evil against civilization", and while thousands of people are buried under the rubble, you should pray for the president.
When they ask you "whose side are you on?", tell them you're on the side of those who are being buried under the remains of their "new order".
